EYCTC's Cycling Holiday in Saumur, France – June 2016
Hot sunshine, good food, great company and cycling. The recipes for an enjoyable holiday – and we had all this during our week's stay at the Hotel du Parc in Saumur this year. Simon Hawksley's Bikeliner coaches took twenty of us to Portsmouth where we boarded the overnight ferry to Ouistreham (Caen). Twenty miles short of our destination, most of us elected to leave the coach and get on our bikes for a ride, in sunshine, to the hotel.
Saumur is situated on the magnificent River Loire and, because of the recent heavy rains, we found that several sections of road were flooded. This brought out the best (and worst) of our map and satnav reading skills and resulted in our seeing little-visited villages and lots of water.
The area is blessed with beautiful scenery and many places of interest. We found the extremes of human habitation here, from cave dwellings to magnificent châteaus. Fortunately, our hotel provided modern facilities, excellent food and friendly staff.
Our holiday had only one defect – it was too short.
