Memorial Rides for Past Members – 15th September 2013

Riders on the 75-mile route assemble at the Methodist Church Hall

After the great summer we've had weather wise, Sunday's forecast was looking pretty glum, rain and high winds. All day Saturday I was receiving emails/phone calls, is the ride still going to be on! "Well I can't cancel it now, the HQ and food for the buffet has been arranged and they're not going to cancel the Great North Run for a bit of rain," praying that I was going to be wrong. I stopped looking at the forecast and prayed again.

Sunday morning came and the sun was out, but for how long! It clouded over as I made my way to to the Methodist Church Hall, where the ride was starting from, riders started to arrive most a bit optimistic about the weather and many chose to do the shorter ride.

In the end it was a good turn out, 17 riders completed the 75 mile Challenge Ride and 17 riders completed the 50 mile Steady Pace Ride and a record entry for the 35 mile Easy Pace Ride of 19 riders. It was good to see many new faces, plus the ones that support us each year.

Some riders did get a shower, others were lucky and missed it, in fact it wasn't as bad as they had first predicted.

A few of the older members came to the HQ to honour the past members and it was nice to see them join in the chat and reminisce on old times.

Whether the riders went round at near racing pace, a steady pace or a slower pace they all have one thing in common: the love of cycling.

Thanks to everybody that helped on the day.
