Barry Hoban Talk and Book Signing

Memories, memories, Barry Hoban's talk at Cafe Velo attracted a capacity audience to hear a fascinating talk about his time in the peloton with Eddie Merckx and the hard men of the 60s and 70s. His new book Vas-y-Barry! (French for Go on Barry) Seemed to be selling well.

It proved to be a trip down memory lane for me as Barry used to come over to Hull and ride with the local chain gang – he looked a real pro to us with the brown legs, smooth fast peddling action and not a scrap of spare fat. I also remembered the IOM cycling week and seeing Tom Simpson and Barry at the social events and racing around the TT course.
A few of us tried Belgium kermesse racing in Ghent, were Barry was based in the early years – I stayed at the famous Cyclists Cafe den Engle (soon to be renamed Velotel Tom Simpson). My 19th place and cash prize in one race seemed a result in those days! On our return we soon created our own short circuit Kermesse or Criterium courses at Catfoss and Beverley Barracks, with me even winning one of them. During Barry's long pro career he also rode 16 6 day races (he was a bit scathing about the current short session modern events) including one of the Skol London series, where I was able to watch the Yorkshire man in action again – from the spectator seats this time rather than the track centre where I had been working during the previous 2 Skol 6 Days events. Memories……
