France by Bike Bus 2014
A party of 20 left the Humber Bridge on 11 May bound for Niort. Once again we travelled with Yorkshire Bikeliner. We arrived in Portsmouth in the evening giving us time for a meal on board the ferry before we settled down to sleep in small but adequate cabins.
After breakfast on the ferry we left St Malo. After stopping for an early lunch, Simon, our driver dropped about 12 of us to cycle the rest of our journey alongside delightful rivers to our hotel Reix about 3 km outside Niort.
Each day we rode directly from the hotel in small groups. The countryside was delightful. Little traffic, few potholes, good cafes. No hills!
On the last full day, Simon took us to La Rochelle. From here, we rode over the bridge to the island of Re which proved about the right size to cycle round during the day. Pete was the star of the day. He fell off his bike riding over some sand, brought off Doug & landed on his wheel. He then rode back to Niort whilst the rest of the party came back on the bus.
Our return ferry sailed at 11 pm so Simon dropped some of us off to ride through an area of Normandy well known as a result of the Second World War. We enjoyed a meal near the port before sailing overnight to Portsmouth & then home. Our hotel, the company, the cycling, the scenery, were all good. The weather could have been better (we were soaked on 2 days).
Seven days of cycling were available for those who wanted it.
I hope to go again next year.
